West Side
Along the Apennine mountain range, characterized by amazing hilly landscapes, with its highest point at Monte Vettore, the west side of Umbria is rich in astonishing historic sites and well preserved Medieval cities, such as Gubbio, Norcia and Città del Castello. Especially Gubbio is famous to be one of the most ancient cities of the whole Region, with the discovery of the Eugubine (or Iguvine) Tables, a set of bronze tablets that together constitute the largest surviving text in ancient Umbrian. This area of the region is a reference point for pilgrimage, with important monasteries founded by Saint Benedict of Norcia, all along the region; the most relevant spread throughout the west side of Umbria are San Salvatore of Monte Corona and the abbey of Petroia
