Tuscia
Nowadays this area coincides with the province of Viterbo, but in the past it corresponded to the whole etruscan empire after its conquest by the ancient Romans; the place still lives in the memories of a noble history, lived as protagonist: from the rivalry with growing power of Rome to the conflicts among the "Guelfi" and "Ghibellini" parties during the maximum splendor period of Viterbo town when it was papal see. Today is another story...Tuscia is far from dizzy rhythms of the modernity and mass tourism, well preserves the amenity of its territory, the genuineness of the food and the marvel of its art.
In the downtown of Viterbo, every trace brings to the middle age: there is the elegance of Palazzo dei Papi, with its specific features, a bit castle, a bit fortress and civilian palace, then the San Pellegrino district with the spurts of the hundred fountains, the churches and the beauty of the noble palaces: it is nice to note these buildings are mainly realized using a special local stone, named Piperno, which creates a beautiful play of lights and shadows. The town of Viterbo is surrounded by the evidences of the passage of the Etruscan civilization, some of the most beautiful cave necropolis of the world can be founded and admired: Castel d'Asso, Norchia are well carved into the tuff stone.
The town of Civita di Bagnoregio is absolutely unique: joined to the rest of the world by a long and narrow walkway, is also named the city which slowly dies, because of continuous subsidence of its faces of tuff; its Romanesque bell tower and renaissance look like castaways who catch the top of the ship's mast. Laying on the top of a mountain, the village overlooks the valley, offering an enchanting and unforgettable scenery to the traveller
