Salerno is a city with a great historical and cultural tradition dating back to Roman times, it reached its maximum splendour in the XI and XII centuries when it was the seat of the famous Salerno School of Medicine. Today Salerno still preserves intact its historical centre, the Norman cathedral dedicated to its Patron Saint Mathew, Prince Arechi's castle which seems to date back to the castrum Salerni of Roman times, and many other monuments which are all important examples of a rich historical tradition.
