The Capital of this region is Trieste which is divided into three major areas being, Gorizia, Pordenone and Udine, these places are particularly well known tourist attractions, which whilst keeping their traditions mix well with modern ideas.
It is a mountainous area in the north and the highest peaks are over 2,700 m above sea-level. It also has a vast area of pine forests, mountain lakes, rivers and streams, which flow down from the mountains. During the winter season it is a well-known tourist retreat.
The area to the south of the mountains is agricultural and produces good quality white wines. In fact, in this region there are 45,000 vineyards in and it is the home to some of the famous DOC wines. One of its food specialities is the sweet ham (prosciutto) which is cured for a long period of time.
There are two main rivers, the Tagliamento and the Timavo which is an underground river that starts in Slovenia.
